Hi! Welcome to my new blog!
My name is Jenna Hazzard, and I’m a young graduate who’s trying to find a place in the world of writing. I recently completed the coursework for a double degree at Wilfrid Laurier University in English and Medieval Studies. I have not officially graduated, but unless something goes horribly wrong between now and convocation, I think it’s safe to say I’m no longer a university student.
During the last few months of my degree, I had to really think about what I wanted to do next. I was academically exhausted and creatively stifled by the end of my four years, so I decided not to apply to grad school. While considering my options, a bit of a scary thought occurred to me: I could seriously pursue my writing.
Financially, I knew that I could
live survive off my part-time library job, which would pay my bills and also leave me ample time to write. In the past, I had always filled my summers with additional jobs, which paid my tuition, but didn’t leave me much time to write. With no tuition bill looming in the Fall, I knew that I had the unique opportunity to work less and write more. Tentatively, I decided not to look for a full-time job. I decided to give myself a chance to be a writer.
To be completely honest, I still struggle with this slightly unorthodox path that I’ve chosen. I struggle with explaining the value of it to people. I struggle with believing in my abilities as a writer. However, the more I write, the more I feel as though I made the right choice.
So why the blog?
I decided to create a blog, because I wanted to document and discuss my experiences as a young writer. Some people say that every word on your blog is a word that is not in your novel, but I have a feeling that I will find great value in spending some of my words on public reflection. However, with that sentiment in mind, this blog is going to have a pretty casual tone. I’m going for heartfelt, not extremely polished.
I’m also hoping to introduce a photography element to the blog. I’m not sure exactly what that’s going to look like, but I will keep you posted as I figure it out!
I hope you enjoy the small bits that I have to say over the coming posts, and I invite you to follow along with my writing journey!
